40kW Biomass Heating – Forestry Commission, Resolven
Client information
In 2010 Sustainable Energy undertook an energy efficiency and biomass heating study at four of the Forestry Commission's District Offices. Approximately 50 staff are employed at the offices in Resolven, which have historically been heated via electric storage heaters.
Client requirements
The Forestry Commission wished to explore the option of installing a biomass boiler to replace the existing storage heaters at the site, with the aim of reducing the energy costs and carbon footprint of the site.
Sustainable Energy's services
Feasibility study to assess the different options available in terms of boiler location, specification, size and cost;
Outline design of boiler house, pellet fuel store, thermal store and pipework;
Planning support, boiler house and fuel store layout;
Role of 'Owner's Engineer' comprising detailed design and specification and support throughout tendering, construction, commissioning and post project evaluation
Sustainable Energy's solution
Sustainable Energy's solution was to install a 40kW biomass boiler, fired by wood pellets. The system includes thermal storage, fuel store and auxiliary gas boiler integration.
Benefits to the client
The biomass project will offset the use of 45,140kWh of electricity per annum and save carbon emissions of 22 tonnes per year.
