Consultant Engineer

Sustainable Energy Ltd is a leading independent UK engineering consultancy specialising in district energy networks. We are seeking a Consultant Engineer to join our growing decarbonisation and decentralised energy team.

Based in central Cardiff, we have delivered leading innovative renewable energy projects for our clients since 1998. Our team of independent district heating and decentralised energy consultants has delivered key technical advisory services for the implementation of many high-profile UK heat networks, large scale renewable energy capacity and infrastructure to make major contributions to the decarbonisation of the UK. Job Summary

As a Consulting Engineer you will be an excellent communicator, who values teamwork. You will assist in managing the project team and help to ensure the delivery of multiple projects across all stages of the project cycle. You will be adaptable to various tasks while maintaining high standards in a fast-moving environment. You will have a strong work ethic and a drive to contribute to the company culture and promote a positive, supportive working environment. You will need to be flexible, confident, motivated, conscientious and detail-focused. A logical and structured approach to data analysis and problem solving is required and you will receive significant on-the-job training.

You will be responsible for helping to deliver a range of low carbon and district energy projects providing specialist knowledge and championing the company’s values whilst assisting in leading or coordinating the efforts of internal junior staff. You will work closely with our senior staff and career development support and mentoring will also be provided.

The role will include but is not limited to:

  • Assistant lead of project delivery including (but not limited to) report writing, detailed modelling and calculations, design outputs, further group duties
  • Assisting in project managing the delivery of district energy projects and familiarity with all stages of the project cycle
  • Client-facing position with clear, detailed communication required throughout project cycle
  • Able to collaborate on different projects simultaneously
  • Attending client/project meetings, taking and issuing meeting minutes, assisting the Project Manager and close liaison with project team colleagues
  • Assisting with the development of tender bids and quotations
  • Data collection, site surveys and the analysis of large data sets
  • Assisting the Project Manager with delegating tasks to the wider project team
  • Coordinating energy demand assessment exercises
  • Assisting with the development of detailed business cases, concept designs and specifications
  • Working with the senior consulting team to develop and train junior staff
  • Assisting with line management of junior staff, including work experience students and interns
  • Other duties and tasks as allocated by the senior team

Applicants for this role will (essential):

  • Hold a relevant engineering or science degree
  • Have a desire to work to decarbonise the UK’s energy systems and play an active role in climate change mitigation
  • Have experience in providing technical consultancy services on low carbon and/or renewable energy topics
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and to take initiative and deliver projects independently when required.
  • Organised and efficient with excellent project management and project delivery skills;
  • Ability to communicate technical information fluently (both written and spoken) in English, with the ability to present technical information in a clear and concise format, suitable for non-specialists;
  • Experience with technical modelling software suitable for the area of expertise, such as GIS, EnergyPro
  • Ability to build and develop energy models using MS Excel, and develop technical reports / business cases in MS Word / PowerPoint

Applicants for this role will (desirable):

  • Hold a higher qualification
  • Have specialised in renewable / low carbon energy generation and / or distribution
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (IMechE, IChemE, CIBSE, Energy Institute, ETC) and be working towards or have gained professional accreditation / Chartership
  • Be proficient in using Sketchup, AutoCAD 2D and 3D and REVIT

Some work outside normal office hours and travel to client sites throughout the UK may be required.
