Biomass CHP

Many sites with electricity and heat demands and the availability of wood feedstock could benefit from biomass Combined Heat and Power (CHP), otherwise known as cogeneration. With large-scale biomass power generation, it is often difficult to find a large local heat demand, however, the siting of small-scale biomass CHP plants at sites with a suitable local heat demand greatly increases project viability. Demand for both the heat and electricity generated by the plant maximises the overall efficiency of the project and gives greatest value for the energy in the wood.

The emergence of small-scale biomass technologies using advanced thermal conversion processes is enabling projects to be viable where they were not previously.

We provide support in both technical and financial risk assessment to clients in the process of developing biomass CHP projects, with conventional combustion technology as well as high efficiency gasification CHP technology.

We regularly assist clients to develop projects using a wide range of biomass feedstocks, ranging from clean forestry and sawmill residues to industrial wood waste.

Just some of the areas that we cover:

• CHP sizing study through wood resource availability

• Economic assessment including government incentives such as FITs, ROCs and RHI

• Technology assessment / supplier selection

• Grid connection /site electrical capacity

• Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) issues

• Planning and Environment Agency issues

• IPPC and Waste Incineration Directive

• Assessment of environmental benefits

• Compliance with Combined Heat and Power Quality Assurance Programme
